Hot off the e-press

In Uncategorized on April 9, 2010 by Randy

On 5 April, a Review in Advance version of a paper from the 2010 Annual Review of Sociology was published on-line: “Causal Mechanisms in the Social Sciences” by Peter Hedstrom and Petri Ylikoski. Hedstrom is a senior professor of analytical sociology at Nuffield College, Oxford. Ylikoski is a philosophy professor at the University of Tampere, Finland; he completed his dissertation in 2002 at the University of Helsinki.

Hedstrom and Ylikoski discuss many of the issues that we have raised about explanation over the past weeks in the seminar, notwithstanding their particular interest in mechanisms in causal explanation. I am attracted to this piece because the authors explicitly consider macro- and meso-level explanations, as well agent-based models. (Addendum at 3:35 PM — I am even more attracted because of Denis Walsh’s colloquium presentation that I am attending now!)

Ylikoski’s dissertation takes a great deal of care in examining the literature on the philosophy of biology; one can see many of the issues we have discussed.

As if you didn’t have enough to read 😉
